The Flemish connection

21 may 2010 -   Recently a manuscript from 1901 emerged.
According to this manuscript by Arthur Merghelynck the family could have connections in Flanders.
The research group is investigating whether this will fit with the existing genealogy. If so, this will be quite an extension of our pedigree.

Embroidery is hot

27 november 2009 -   Always wanted to embroider your coat of arms? Now you can with this pattern.
It's not a true pattern for embroidery but this pattern should be a challenge for the stayer.

You can find the image through this   link

Family event 2009

08 november 2009 -   The family event 2009 in the town of Zuidland was attended by over 200 family members.
With visitors literally from across the globe. But as can be expected the majority came from the surrounding areas. A lot of family members took the opportunity to find out more on the family history and in turn contributed to the recording of the family heritage.
All visitors were certain about the fact that this event should be repeated.

Jolie van Rij - Hakkert made some footage of the event. These videos can be seen via the links below.

- Daniel van Ry, from West Jordan, Utah, addresses the family (part 1)

- Bas and Rob van Rij both with the coat of arms as a tattoo (part 2)

- two high school friends meet again now both as ms. van Rij (part 3)

The group photo and other pictures can be seen through this   link

Steamship Texelstroom

05 august 2009 -   Recently this picture of SS Texelstroom was found on the internet.

In 1941 this ship was torpedoed 25 miles of the coast of Iceland.
Abraham van Rij and 24 other crew members lost their lives in the event.

Cooky tin

15 may 2009 -   In the first part of the 20th century the firm J.D. van Rij in the town of Brielle sold cookies in cooky tins with the name J.D. van Rij on it.
Some of the grandchildren are searching for specimens of such a tin.
Do you own such a tin and want to sell it? Send an email.

This picture was taken by Belinda van Rij from her copy of the tin.

Family back to the roots for one day

28 february 2009 -   On Saturday November 7th 2009 the van Rij family will paint the town of Zuidland. That’s the day when the family will reunite in party center ‘de Zuidlandse Hoeve’.

There and then the family will be right back on the spot where it all started in the 15th century. A ‘coming home’ after all those years.

At this event those early years will most certainly be discussed, just like the rest of the family genealogy.

Moreover, there will be drinks and snacks. There will be shaking of hands, tapping each other on the shoulder, telling old stories, looking at old photographs and all the other things family members do when they meet after so many years.

There will be music and laughter.

So to everybody who is in the position to take part: please do!

Family meeting october 19th 2008 in Schiedam

20 october 2008 -   The family meeting was held in party centre 'Het Proveniershuys'. Some 50 family members visited the venue.
They spent the afternoon shaking hands, looking at old pictures and telling each other stories from old times. And of course a group photo was taken.
This photo and other pictures can be seen through this   link

Remarkable item found on the internet

23 october 2007 -   Nowadays a lot of objects are sold via the internet. This phenomenon can be a source of information by itself so it seems. At the moment a clock of the Vanry Breweries is on auction on the net.
A relative owning a brewery? Can dreams come true?   link
